Even though there aren’t many travels happening in the world right now, it never hurts to learn about the places we might visit one day. Sometimes, our desire to travel can be satisfied just by seeing these places and imagining being able to go there someday in the future.
Normally, if you are planning to visit another country, the first step would be to book your flight. But not so fast – sometimes you can’t just hop on a plane and go anywhere in the world. Not if you want to visit the five countries below, for example:

1 – Vatican City

This is a tricky one. The Vatican City is not just an independent city-state, but it’s also the smallest country in the world. The 442,000 sqm area does not have its own airport, probably because it’s really “embedded” within Rome. Rome, as a point of reference, has two international airports. Visitors can fly to Rome and then go to the small city / state / Roman Catholic country. Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is about 29.5 km away from the Vatican City boundaries.

2 – San Marino

Speaking of Italy, San Marino also does not have an airport, despite being surrounded by Italian lands. As the fifth smallest country in the world, San Marino does not suffer from inaccessibility, as it is just 14.5 km away from the famous Federico Fellini International Airport. Don’t feel bad for the 33,000 inhabitants of San Marino – they also live in one of the richest countries in the world, with one of the highest GDPs per capita.

3 – Monaco

Surrounded on three sides by France and one by the Mediterranean Sea, Monaco is the second smallest country in the world. It also holds the title of the most densely populated sovereign state in the world. To get to Monaco, you will have to take a boat or a half-hour car ride after landing at Nice Côte d’Azur airport in France. It is especially suitable to enter by car – Monaco hosts one of the oldest and most prestigious Formula 1 races, the Monaco Grand Prix, with the shortest track of all F1 races.

4 – Liechtenstein

As the smallest country in the world to border two countries (Austria and Germany), Liechtenstein also does not have an airport. Visitors would need to enter by car, boat, or the popular railway system from nearby Swiss or Austrian railway stations. The nearest airport is St. Gallen – Altenrhein, in Switzerland. For perspective, Liechtenstein is nearly eight times smaller than the city of Los Angeles, with its largest city housing just 6,000 residents. It’s small, but mighty, with one of the highest per capita GDPs and one of the lowest national debts.

5 – Andorra

Andorra is landlocked on the border between Spain and France. Located in the Pyrenees mountain range, this micro-nation offers beautiful hikes, climbs, and views. Andorra’s capital is Andorra la Vella, which is also the highest capital in Europe. There are five airports within three hours of Andorra, in Spain and France. With or without an airport, Andorra is definitely doing something right – it has one of the highest life expectancies in the world.
