Ferrari has announced a recall involving 614 units of the SF90 sold in the United States due to a fire risk.

Ferrari has instructed owners to discontinue the use of their $500,000 hybrid supercars until the issue is resolved.

The recall is due to a defect in the oil distribution tube that supplies the turbocharger, which could potentially lead to a vehicle fire. This safety measure covers both the standard SF90 Stradale and the SF90 Spider produced between November 2022 and September 2023.

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal that 614 units of the hybrid plug-in model were affected in the USA.

Ferrari, concerned about the potential presence of this issue in each of the affected supercars, has advised owners not to drive their SF90 until a dealer can replace the problematic tube.

The issue was identified during a pre-production review of a new vehicle in July 2023 when the oil pressure warning light and a message of limited engine performance prompted Ferrari to investigate the problem.

While the specific model hasn’t been named, Ferrari confirmed that the SF90 uses the same defective oil delivery tube.

The tube with notches and reduced thickness was improperly manufactured, increasing the risk of oil leakage in the engine compartment and, consequently, a vehicle fire. Fortunately, there have been no reports of fire incidents in any of the affected vehicles, and Ferrari has also not received complaints about the described issue.

Owners of the affected SF90s will be notified by first-class mail on December 16, and dealers have already been instructed to replace the defective tube at no additional cost.

Interestingly, this is the second recall for the SF90 in a year. In March 2023, the hybrid supercar was recalled due to concerns that the front airbag might impact a child’s seat if installed on the passenger’s seat. This affected a total of 13 Stradale SF90s sold in the USA.
