You’ve probably heard of a rain of men, but what about a wine flood?

The residents of the charming São Lourenço do Bairro, a small Portuguese village, witnessed an astonishing scene when two large tanks from the Levira Distillery accidentally spilled 2.2 million liters, equivalent to 600,000 gallons of red wine, through the peaceful streets of the town.

This unusual event left everyone baffled, as a sufficient amount of red liquid flowed downhill to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

A video circulating online showed the magnitude of the spill, which could have triggered a serious environmental alert. Fortunately, the Anadia Firefighters acted swiftly and managed to contain the wine before it could contaminate the Certima River.

However, despite their heroic efforts, they couldn’t prevent the red wine from flooding the basement of a nearby residence.

Since then, the Levira Distillery has issued an apology for the incident, as reported by the NY Post: “We take full responsibility for the costs related to cleaning and repairing the damage, ensuring that teams are working tirelessly to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

It’s interesting to note that in September 2020, a Spanish winery faced a similar situation when a large storage tank ruptured at Bodegas Vitivinos in Villamalea, resulting in the spillage of 50,000 liters of red wine.

However, the proportions of the Levira Distillery incident were nearly four times larger than what occurred in Spain.
